An Ohio substitute teacher is in police custody after officers reportedly found evidence suggesting that she may have had sex with at least two male students.
Madeline Marx, who was working at Fairmont High School, allegedly had intercourse with one 11th grader in a Big Lots parking lot in July and with another in a parking lot outside an apartment complex in September, reports WHIO.
he 23-year-old reportedly told officers that she sent "several nude pictures" on Instagram and Snapchat. Marx has been charged with two counts of sexual battery.
She was arrested on Nov. 8 after school officials escorted her out of her classroom earlier that day.
"We became aware [the teacher was] possibly involved with inappropriate activities with a juvenile," explained Kettering Superintendent Scott Inskeep said, according to WHIO. "When we become aware of them then we will remove those people and not have them around our students."
As of Nov. 9, Marx remains in police custody, although that day a judge authorized her release from jail, provided that she lives with her father for the duration of the case.
According to documents from Kettering Municipal Court, a 17-year-old student told officers that Marx performed oral sex on him, and a 16-year-old said that he and Marx had intercourse, notes the Dayton Daily News.
Marx has a cum laude bachelor's degree in education, is licensed as a resident education intervention specialist license for students from kindergarten to 12th grade, and has worked at other schools before.
"I am passionate about children and their education," she reportedly wrote on her substitute teacher application. "I am a hard-worker, who focuses on individual [students'] strengths and needs. I have worked with special needs children since high school."
She also said that she wanted to become a teacher because it would give her "the ability to provide children an advocate for their education as well as their well-being."
The district intends to ask the state to revoke her teaching license, according to WRGT.
"I just think parents can trust us with your kids every day, and I can ensure that 99.9 percent are doing it the right way, and doing it appropriately," Inskeep told WRGT, noting that substitutes go through the same stringent vetting process that regular teachers do before they are hired.
Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said that Marx "took advantage of her position and developing a sexual relationship with minor students."
"Teachers are entrusted with the responsibility of educating children who are becoming young adults," he added.
